Indian Army Weapon Systems
"Modernisation of armies give power but, to use that power you have to take training from Indian Army."
The Indian Army, one of the largest land-based military forces in the world, employs a wide range of weapon systems to safeguard the nation's security. Here are some notable weapon systems utilized by the Indian Army:
Small Arms: The Indian Army employs a variety of small arms, including assault rifles, carbines, machine guns, sniper rifles, and pistols. The INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle was the standard-issue rifle, but efforts are underway to replace it with newer rifles like the AK-203.
Artillery: The Indian Army operates various artillery systems, including towed, self-propelled, and rocket artillery. The towed artillery includes the 155mm Bofors howitzers and 105mm Indian Field Guns. The indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) is currently under development. Self-propelled artillery includes the 155mm K9 Vajra and the 130mm M-46 Catapult.
Tanks: The Indian Army has a diverse fleet of tanks. The T-90 Bhishma, a Russian-made main battle tank, is in service, along with the older T-72 tanks. Efforts are also being made to develop and induct the indigenously designed Arjun Mk-II and Arjun Mk-III tanks.
Armored Vehicles: The Indian Army employs various armored vehicles for troop transport, reconnaissance, and combat support. These include the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle, Casspir mine-resistant vehicles, and the indigenous Arjun Armored Recovery and Repair Vehicle.
Air Defense Systems: The Indian Army employs a range of air defense systems to protect against aerial threats. These include surface-to-air missiles like the Akash, SpyDer, and the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM). The Army also operates various anti-aircraft guns.
Helicopters: The Indian Army utilizes helicopters for transport, reconnaissance, and close air support. These include the Russian-made Mi-17 transport helicopters, the HAL Dhruv, and the Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs): The Indian Army operates a variety of UAVs for surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition purposes. This includes the Heron, Searcher, and the indigenous Nishant UAV.
Rocket Systems: The Indian Army employs multiple rocket systems, such as the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher System and the Smerch Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher System, for long-range artillery strikes.
Engineering Equipment: The Indian Army utilizes various engineering equipment for construction, mine clearing, and other engineering tasks. This includes bulldozers, excavators, armored engineering vehicles, and bridging systems.
It's important to note that the Indian Army's weapon systems are continually evolving, with efforts focused on indigenous development, modernization, and the procurement of advanced technology to enhance its operational capabilities.
Currently used Rifles:
The Indian Army has employed several rifles over the years. Here are some notable rifles used by the Indian Army:
INSAS (Indian Small Arms System): The INSAS was the standard-issue rifle for the Indian Army for many years. It is a family of firearms that includes the INSAS assault rifle, INSAS carbine, and INSAS light machine gun. The 5.56x45mm INSAS assault rifle has been widely used by infantry units.
AK-47/AK-56: The Indian Army has also used variants of the AK-47 and AK-56 rifles, which are Soviet/Russian designs. These rifles have been used in specific roles and by certain units within the Indian Army.
AK-203: The Indian Army is in the process of phasing out the INSAS rifles and transitioning to the AK-203 as the new standard-issue rifle. The AK-203 is a modernized variant of the AK-47, designed in Russia and manufactured in India under a joint venture.
SIG716: The Indian Army has procured the SIG716, a 7.62x51mm NATO caliber assault rifle, for specific roles and units. It is a battle-proven rifle known for its reliability and accuracy.
Dragunov Sniper Rifle: The Indian Army utilizes the Dragunov sniper rifle, specifically the Dragunov SVD (Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova), which is a semi-automatic sniper rifle chambered in 7.62x54mmR.
Heckler & Koch PSG1: The Indian Army has also employed the Heckler & Koch PSG1 sniper rifle, which is a highly accurate semi-automatic rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO.
INSAS Excalibur: The INSAS Excalibur is an upgraded version of the INSAS rifle developed by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in India. It features enhancements such as a Picatinny rail system for accessories, improved ergonomics, and other modifications.
